what is accessibility?

You could just say, "why don't I want people to visit my website?" Accessibilty in it's definition really means the abilty to access. Your website should allow everyone to have equal access to it's contents. A lot of companies just provide a text only version of their website, that is completely wrong. Providing alternative resources for users with disabilities doesn't make your website accessible, providing equal access to the same resources is what needs to be done.

why does accessibility matter?

This is a good question to ask and even easier to answer. There is an extrodinarily high number of the UK's population that could have problems accessing information and this includes information on websites. Just try to imagine going into your local supermarket and seeing someone at the door telling every fifth person to leave because they didn't want to make the supermarket accessible. That supermarket would be in really big trouble.

what does the law state?

The disability discrimination act states:

"The act makes it unlawful for a service provider to disciminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide them any service which it provides to members of the public".

"For people with visual impairments and hearing disabilities, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include ... accessible websites".
